WAYS TO SERVE
Often we see seniors as someone to serve
but God calls them, too, to serve others. The following is
taken from one of the devotions in "Devotions for the
Chronologically Gifted" published by Concordia Publishing
House. The book costs US$8 and may be ordered from CPH at
3558 South Jefferson Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63118-3968 or 1-800-325-340.
If you're not a senior the book would make a wonderful gift
for someone you love.
Consider seriously the talents and gifts
that God gave you and the many experiences you have had that
make life rich and full. What do you see as your strengths?
Are you a good listener, an effective leader, a handy helper,
a teacher, a good grandparent, a handicrafter, an encourager,
an organizer, a gardener, a Bible student, a cook, a good
shopper, a person of prayer? God provides these gifts, uniquely
yours, and He asks you to serve Him by helping others.
As you recognize your gifts, identify who
might benefit from them. Perhaps you are actively using your
talents to serve others. But if you are a senior who finds
time dragging slowly-or if you're increasingly self-absorbed,
bitter, anxious, and losing your sense of purpose-it's time
to regroup. Consider how you might make a difference in the
life of a neighbor, relative or church member. It's time to
ask God to renew your heart and mind as you dust off your
call to serve.
Good listeners have a unique calling. Loving
listeners help people with problems by allowing them to share
their burdens with one who cares
Handy helpers can provide simple repairs
to church facilities or for people in the community who are
unable to make them or pay for them. A good organizer can
orchestrate food donations to families in crisis-when serious
illness or sudden death intrudes on life. Teachers can tutor
underprivileged children. Loving grandparents can read stories
and volunteer at children's centers. Bible students can organize
home Bible studies. Handicrafters can teach their skills to
others who also could enjoy creating things of beauty. Encouragers
are welcome everywhere, especially in hospitals and nursing
homes. Effective leaders are needed as volunteers and consultants
in many areas of church management. And persons of prayer
are always ready to take their burdens and those of others,
to the Lord, laying them at His feet and seeking His guidance.
As one of God's people, called to
serve, you will see in the needs of others blessed opportunities
to answer His call. May God grant it!
